MSD244 Mini Tractor — L24 Diesel, 4×4 Traction, Built for Ground Where 2WD Falls Short
The MSD244 is the four-wheel-drive MSD platform powered by the L24 — a single-cylinder, horizontal, water-cooled diesel with direct injection, a 115 mm bore, approximately 1.246 L displacement, and a rated output of 17 kW at 2200 rpm. In everyday use this is the engine class operators know as “24 hp”: simple, torquey at low speed, and repairable with basic tools. Because the MSD244 drives all four wheels through a front-drive axle, that torque reaches the ground with far less slip in wet soil, on slopes, or with a loaded trailer. The 6+1 mechanical gearbox, 540 rpm PTO, category I three-point linkage, and differential lock carry over unchanged. If you need a compact 4WD tractor with a straightforward single-cylinder diesel and standard implement interfaces, the MSD244 is built around exactly that combination.
The MSD244 belongs to the MSD series of small four-wheel agricultural tractors. It is a four-wheel-drive, frame-chassis mini tractor built around the L24 single-cylinder diesel — a horizontal, water-cooled, direct-injection engine with a 115 mm bore, approximately 1.246 L displacement, and a rated power of 17 kW / 2200 rpm. In the small-tractor market this engine is routinely described as a 24 hp-class unit. Compared with 2WD MSD variants, the defining feature is the 4×4 driveline: the MSD244 engages the front axle under load, converting engine torque into drawbar pull more effectively in low-traction conditions. It is aimed at smallholders, orchardists, and mixed farmers who want four-wheel-drive traction without electronic controls or a larger machine footprint.

L24 single-cylinder, direct-injection diesel. The 115 mm-bore, water-cooled L24 displaces approximately 1.246 L and is rated at 17 kW / 2200 rpm — a “24 hp-class” engine known for simple mechanical injection, strong low-speed torque, and field-serviceable reliability.
Four-wheel drive for low-traction work. The MSD244’s front-drive axle engages under load, putting power to all four wheels in wet soil, on slopes, and during loaded trailer work. Published traction data for 4WD tractors of this class show substantially higher drawbar pull and traction efficiency than equivalent 2WD machines.
6 forward + 1 reverse mechanical gearbox. The proven MSD shift pattern gives flexible speed selection for tillage, transport, and PTO work without electronic controls.
540 rpm PTO and category I three-point hitch. Industry-standard interfaces for rotary tillers, mowers, sprayers, and other small implements — no proprietary adapters required.
Differential lock for mud, loose soil, and wet grass. When one rear wheel loses grip, the differential lock ties the rear axle together; combined with 4WD, it gives the MSD244 a meaningful traction advantage.
Compact four-wheel chassis with a driven front axle. The 4WD front axle adds pulling capability without expanding the MSD244 into a larger tractor class. It remains narrow enough for orchards, greenhouses, and inter-row cultivation.
Water-cooled thermal stability. The L24’s radiator-based cooling supports sustained PTO work and long working days in warm conditions better than air-cooled engines of similar output.

Engage 4WD deliberately, not permanently. Four-wheel drive is a traction aid for wet soil, slopes, loose ground, and heavy draft — not an all-surface default. On firm dry ground and during tight turns, prolonged 4WD engagement increases tyre scrub and front-axle stress.
Match front and rear tyre wear and inflation. In a 4WD tractor, front and rear rolling circumferences are matched by design. Uneven wear, mismatched pressures, or a different tyre size front-to-rear can cause driveline wind-up and accelerated wear. Replace tyres in axle pairs.
Use the differential lock only as needed. Engage it when one rear wheel is slipping, and disengage before turning on firm ground.
Respect PTO load limits, not just engine horsepower. The L24 is rated at 17 kW at the engine, but PTO output is lower. Compare the implement’s PTO power requirement against the tractor’s rated PTO power, not its engine rating.
Warm up the water-cooled diesel before load. Give the L24 a short low-idle warm-up, especially in cold weather, before running a PTO implement at full load.
Keep the radiator clear. Clean chaff, dust, and mud from the radiator fins before each long session and check coolant level regularly.
Inspect front axle and driveshaft guards. The 4WD front axle and front driveshaft introduce additional rotating components. Check boots, guards, and mounting bolts before field work, and never operate without a driveshaft shield.
